Q: What does your company do and how long has it been in operation?
A: Sunesys provides dark fiber and managed bandwidth solutions for education, healthcare, enterprise and telecommunications carriers in major metropolitan areas across the country. We bring effective and cost-efficient solutions to a variety of reputable institutions from coast-to-coast, building infrastructure and connecting network solutions.
Since 1979, we've been laying the foundation for the future of telecommunications. What began as Coleman Excavating grew into Blair Park Services as we expanded into underground cable installation in 1983. In 1986, we began installing fiber optic cable, and with the Telecommunications Act of 1996 we became Sunesys, offering design, construction and project management of large-scale fiber deployments. We've been bringing lightning fast network solutions to schools, businesses and hospitals ever since, from Pennsylvania to Illinois to California. Our dedication and experience lies in over 7,000 miles of fiber, connecting tens of thousands to each other and to the world.
Our parent company, Quanta Services, Inc. (NYSE: PWR) is a leading specialized contracting services company, delivering infrastructure network solutions for the electric power, natural gas, telecommunications and cable television industries. Quanta Services has operations in all 50 states and Canada.

Q: To what do you attribute your company’s success in the communications industry?
A: As an experienced telecommunications provider, Sunesys has been privileged to be an industry leader laying fiber optic cable for over 25 years. We have stayed true to our original roots and through industry consolidation and others evolving business plans have not strayed from offering traditional solutions. As a dedicated provider, we 100 percent own and operate our entire fiber network and participate in all aspects of our customers’ networks from construction through to maintenance. Our professional staff is some of the most knowledgeable in the business focusing on the true needs of our customers. We take pride in being an organization that not only fulfills these needs but is constantly forecasting any future requirements. We don’t believe in forklift upgrades; rather it is vital to us that our customers are offered a future-proof solution that is secure, reliable and simple. Our success lies in this experience.

Q: What have been the biggest obstacles your company has faced in the marketplace?
A: With the growing needs of network infrastructure, Sunesys has faced challenges in keeping pace with constantly evolving technology.
Bandwidth requirements are in constant motion as new applications are continuously deployed across organizations. Noted network usability guru Jakob Nielsen authored the “law of Internet bandwidth.” This principal states that end user speeds need to grow 50 percent per year to keep pace with computer processing demand. Moore’s Law has adequately predicted that computers double in processing power and capabilities every eighteen months. This prediction has been spot on for 20+ years and the principal is still in use today.
What does all this mean? Simplified, current network infrastructure needs to be elastic enough to meet the growth requirements of today’s computers and applications. Based on the above, a location that requires 5 Megs of bandwidth today will need 40 Megs five years from now. This places a tremendous amount of pressure on today’s IT infrastructure to support a network that is both cost effective and more importantly scalable without a forklift upgrade to both the equipment and the network.
We feel the dynamic environment of changing technology and bandwidth needs coupled with continuous regulation and consolidation of the marketplace will continue to be hurdles for the telecom industry in years to come.

Q: What have been some of your company’s most recent achievements (new customer wins, new service/product deployment, etc.)?
A: Sunesys currently maintains and operates over 7,000 fiber route miles and 5,000+ lit nodes. We provide network infrastructure for over 200 educational institutions, libraries and intermediate units and are among the top 15 service providers for e-rate funding in the country. We continue to expand our footprint, adding new dark fiber and managed connections every day.
In January 2011, Sunesys was awarded a contract valued at $99.7 million to design and install a statewide fiber optic network in Pennsylvania by a coalition of Pennsylvania colleges and universities, research and health care organizations and economic development entities called the Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research (KINBER). This 1,700+ mile network known as PennREN was the sixth largest BTOP project and funded in part and constructed by Sunesys and Blair Park Services, Sunesys’ sister construction company. The network is set for completion in February 2013.

Q: Why is it important for your company to be a COMPTEL member?
A: Sunesys makes a strong commitment to be a part of organizations within the telecom industry that support the promotion of broadband services and technological innovation. As a current member of the COMPTEL organization, we feel it an important resource for providers. COMPTEL strives to provide members with an outlet for industry networking, regulatory and industry news, and an avenue to support industry leading discussions. With constant changes in the regulatory marketplace, COMPTEL keeps Sunesys “in the know;” promoting synergy amongst members, which helps to bring best-in-class solutions to our customer base.
