BroadLand: Mignon Clyburn Statement on President Biden State of the Union

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 1, 2022) – Tonight, President Joe Biden delivered his first State of the Union address to the American people. In the address, President Biden highlighted the bipartisan Infrastructure Act investment into affordable, high-speed internet.

In response, Mignon Clyburn, co-chair of the INCOMPAS BroadLand USA Campaign, released the following statement:

“In his first State of the Union address, President Biden highlighted the need to connect all Americans to high-speed internet and hit on the two themes that will help make this goal a reality: competition and affordability.

“Thanks to the bipartisan Infrastructure Act and other relief funding, America is poised to build a better broadband future. By taking an all-of-the-above approach to deployment, we can build new future-proof networks that benefit all Americans, urban and rural, who need access to low-cost internet solutions.

“President Biden also highlighted the need for more competition in our economy, and was met with bipartisan applause. Today, millions of Americans are trapped living with broadband monopolies and lack of choices for broadband services. This drives up costs and lowers innovation and customer service. As we build a better broadband future, policy makers must make competition laws a top priority.”

** Last year, INCOMPAS, the internet and competitive networks association, launched the BroadLand USA campaign to promote “internet for all” and highlight the need for the United States to win the global broadband speed race with China, Europe and other nations that have faster speed goals and massive fiber investment.
